Regulation 4, WRAS, KIWA & NSF

According to Water Regs UK, Regulation 4(1)(a) states that every water fitting used within the application should be of an appropriate quality and standard. Essentially, this is a set of requirements that promote the highest quality for products and components in relation to their use in contact with drinking water and other sensitive applications. In order to be certified, these products must comply with a set of criteria established by one of the available regulatory bodies; KIWA, WRAS and NSF. NSF International (NSF) is an independent certification body that provides certification services for materials, equipment, systems and components used in contact with drinking water throughout the world. The NSFReg4 certification process involves testing against relevant standards such BS 6920

The Dutch standardisation body KIWA also offers certifications against Regulation 4 standards. This organisation has been actively involved in developing European standards since its establishment in 1950.

The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is a UK-based independent organisation responsible for regulating drinking water supply in England and Wales. It is the most recognised Regulation 4 authority within the UK, but it is essential to remember that it is not the sole Regulation 4 authority.

For many years, it has been ingrained within our industry that the tanks and pumps, in fact any equipment associated with the management of wholesome water, must be WRAS approved. However, as we mentioned previously this is now simply not the case. It is no longer appropriate to refer to materials that must be compliant with Regulation 4, as being WRAS approved. Water equipment manufacturers are eligible to receive accreditation from any of the aforementioned governing bodies. Simply put, when sending a tender, or quoting a project, all equipment should be referred and/or requested to comply with Regulation 4.
