Water Tank Replacement in Commercial, Industrial and Residential Settings

In commercial, industrial and residential operations, ensuring the seamless functioning of essential infrastructure is critical. Water storage tanks are crucial to sustaining operations across these various industries. We will uncover vital aspects of a water tank replacement for multiple applications, exploring the benefits, best practices, key considerations and, most importantly, ways to prolong your tank lifespan.

Importance of a Water Tank Replacement

1. Optimising Efficiency: Aged or deteriorating water tanks can significantly compromise efficiency. Leaks and corrosion can hinder water quality and system performance. Businesses can ensure a reliable and efficient water supply with an effective cleaning and maintenance regime and invest in a water tank replacement.
2. Compliance and Regulations: Upgrading to compliant GRP water storage solutions ensures alignment with regulatory standards and mitigating risks.
3. Cost-Effective Solutions: While the initial investment in water tank replacement may seem substantial, the long-term benefits outweigh the costs. GRP tanks are designed with durability and energy efficiency, resulting in lower maintenance expenses and reduced operational costs.

Key Considerations for a Water Tank Replacement

1. Capacity and Demand Analysis: Understanding the water consumption patterns and demand fluctuations within your commercial or industrial residential facility is crucial. Work closely with consultants and estimators to assess the optimal tank capacity that meets your operational needs and growth projections. Customers must know the modern capacity meter readings, which consider water consumption patterns. Understanding the water consumption patterns will assist in sizing the water tank replacement.
2. Material Selection: Choosing the suitable material for your new water tank ensures longevity and reliability. Tricel Weston’s Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRP) water tanks provide a durable and reliable solution. Tailor your material choice to the specific requirements of your industry.
3. Technology Integration: Embrace the latest advancements in water storage technology. Intelligent monitoring systems and leak detection can enhance the overall efficiency of your water storage infrastructure, providing real-time insights and minimising downtime.

Steps to Cover Before Completing a Water Tank Replacement

Firstly, inadequate assessment can pose a significant challenge. Thoroughly inspect the existing GRP tank for signs of wear, corrosion, or structural damage. Failing to identify potential issues beforehand may lead to complications during replacement, impacting the longevity of the new tank.

Typically, what our teams have noticed on-site is that existing base arrangements can be the cause of the problem. If a concrete floor is not constructed correctly, it will sink, and the concrete piers deteriorate over time. In that case, using base steels is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the water tank replacement.

‘The top surface of the foundation, whether it is flat screed concrete, steelwork, support walls or pillars, should be flat, level and free from any local irregularities. It should not vary more than 2mm in any 1m, or a total of 6mm in any 6m, measured laterally or diagonally. Intermittent supports should be spaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and should be continuous in one direction.

If foundations are to be provided by suspended floors or beams, then the foundation should be constructed so that when the tank is full, the combined deflections should not exceed 1/500th of the span.’

Proper sizing has to be done correctly. Selecting a tank with adequate capacity can result in a sufficient water supply, while an oversized tank may lead to unnecessary expenses and space constraints. Precise calculations based on water demand and usage patterns are crucial for a successful water tank replacement.

Furthermore, neglecting the importance of professional installation poses risks. Engaging qualified technicians ensures adherence to industry standards and minimises the likelihood of leaks or structural failures. As a reputable GRP water tank manufacturer, Tricel Weston is a go-to company for water tank replacement for commercial, industrial and residential applications. Our highly skilled site crews have years of experience successfully carrying out water tank replacements across the UK.

We offer supply and installation, which allows us to provide our customers with a 12-month warranty. Supply-only projects come with no warranty.

How to Prolong the Life Cycle of a Water Tank?

Ensuring the longevity of a water tank and avoiding having to purchase a water tank replacement requires a strategic approach. First and foremost, regular tank cleaning according to the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L18 helps comply with legal and regulatory duties concerning Legionella. The guide looks at the control measures, risk assessments and, most importantly, the duties and responsibilities of those involved in the supply of water systems. Routine cleaning is imperative to prevent sediment accumulation and microbial growth within the tank.

Maintenance is another equally important action that will help prolong your tank lifespan. We recommend periodic inspection of your water tank for any possible damage caused by foreign objects or third parties, and if desired, the exterior surfaces may be cleaned with a mild detergent. Where the tank has been drained for maintenance, it must not be left empty for more than three days. If it is to be left empty for longer than three days, then it is advised that you contact us for re-fill advice.
Periodic inspection will help identify and address potential issues, such as loose bolts, rust or leaks. Customers who notice loose bolts on their tank can request a retorque. Tricel Weston Hot Press GRP Sectional Tanks are made from high-strength isophthalic-based polyester resin. As a non-corrosive material, the tanks require no specific maintenance other than good housekeeping.

Keeping an eye on ancillary items is crucial, and this involves making sure the ball valves are aligned correctly, overflow pipes are not blocked, and access ladders are securely fitted at all times. No items should be leant against the tank, and no additional equipment should be attached to the water tank, including fixings or brackets. If any of those above points are discovered, this can lead to the remaining warranty being voided, and repairs to damages caused by those points, as mentioned earlier, are fully chargeable.
