The Importance of Water Tanks and Pumps
The right water tanks and pumps ensure adequate water supply and distribution for various purposes, from domestic and commercial to industrial applications. In this guide, we’ll delve into the different types of water tanks and pumps available, factors to consider before purchasing them, their importance, and the collaboration between Tricel Weston and Tricel Portsmouth, which allows us to be a one-stop shop for all projects that require a tank and pumping solution.
Water tanks and pumps are the key components of water management systems. They facilitate water storage, distribution, and pressurisation, making them ideal for commercial, industrial and domestic applications.
Types of Water Tanks
Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) water tanks are popular due to their lightweight material and durability. At Tricel Weston, we offer them in various sizes and shapes, making them suitable for different applications.
One Piece Tanks
One Piece Tanks, offered by Tricel Weston, are designed to store potable water. We can also make bespoke tanks with specialist resins that enable the storage of mild and aggressive chemicals. Our tanks range in size from 45 to 16,000 litres and are Regulation 4(1)a Approved certified by WRAS, ensuring they are of the highest industry standards.
Hot Press Sectional Tanks
Hot Press Sectional Tanks are an ideal solution for large-scale water storage requirements. Constructed in modular format these tanks are made up from metric sized GRP panels individually assembled on-site by our expert site crews. The modular design allows for easy transportation and installation. Through KIWA, our Hot Press Sectional Tanks are certified to Regulation 4(1)a.
Totally Internally Flanged (TIF) Tanks
Do you have limited plant room space? If the answer is yes, Totally Internally Flanged Tanks are engineered specifically for projects with restricted space. TIF tanks can be installed with as little as 50mm clearance around three sides, maximising water storage capacity. Our range of TIF tanks is certified by NSF, one of the regulatory bodies under Regulation 4(1)a and can hold up to 500,000 litres.

Factors to Consider Before Buying a Water Tank
Water Tank Capacity
The capacity of the water tank should be chosen based on the water demand and available space for installation. It’s essential to ensure an adequate reserve to meet water needs during periods of low supply or maintenance.
Tank Material
Selecting the suitable material for the water tank is crucial. All Tricel Weston tank systems are manufactured using the highest quality approved materials to ensure longevity and water quality. Consider factors such as durability, resistance to corrosion, and suitability for the intended application.
Types of Water Pumps
Centrifugal Pumps
Centrifugal pumps are the most common type of water pump, characterised by their simple design and high flow rates. They use centrifugal force to efficiently propel transfer fluids, including water, oils, and solvents, by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Centrifugal pumps come in different sizes and configurations, including single-stage for low-pressure applications, two-stage for medium-head tasks, and multi-stage pumps for high-head operations, catering to a wide range of fluid transport needs.
Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps are designed to operate underwater. They are typically used to drain grey water from domestic, commercial, and industrial settings. Each pump is sealed to protect the electrical parts inside. Depending on the water being pumped, each application requires a different submersible pump.
Circulating Pumps
Circulating pumps are water booster pumps mainly used to transport hot water within heating and cooling systems. Their main function is to increase water pressure around a heated water circuit. There are two main types of circulating pumps: on-demand and time & temperature circulating pumps.
Fire Pumps
Fire pumps, powered by electric motors or diesel engines, are critical in emergency fire response. Their primary function is to supply water from storage tanks to sprinkler systems or fire suppression mechanisms. These pumps efficiently deliver cold water from sprinkler tanks through pipelines to fire sprinklers, effectively extinguishing fires when needed most.
Factors to Consider Before Buying a Water Pump
Water Source
Consider the type and depth of the water source when selecting a pump, as different pumps are designed for specific applications, such as clean water, wastewater, shallow wells, deep wells, or surface water sources.
Water Depth
The depth of the water will determine the type of pump required. Submersible pumps are suitable for deep wells, while jet pumps are better suited for shallow wells or surface water sources.
Pumping Capacity
Choose a pump with the appropriate capacity to meet the water demand of your household or application. Consider flow rate, pressure requirements, and peak usage periods.
Power Source
Select a pump compatible with the available power source, whether electricity, diesel, or solar energy. Battery-powered pumps offer benefits such as portability and are on standby for emergency situations. Ensure that the pump’s power requirements match the capacity of the power supply to prevent overload or inefficiency.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential for prolonging the lifespan and ensuring the optimal performance of the water pump. Follow manufacturer recommendations
